UNICEF Supplies Aid To Eastern Libya, As African Union Extends Condolences

Local authorities declared three days of mourning for the victims of the floods.

Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, has extended condolences to Libya over devastating floods in the country.

Faki wrote on  X “Following the hurricane that struck eastern Libya, I express my full solidarity and compassion with the families of the victims and the missing.” 

Similarly, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided assistance to thousands of people affected by the deadly floods in eastern Libya.

UNICEF said, “Amid the crisis caused by the Storm in East Libya, UNICEF Libya is responding with urgency mobilising 1,100 hygiene kits and vital medical supplies for 10,000 people and providing essential clothing kits for 500 children.” 

“UNICEF Libya expresses deep condolences to all people who lost family members in East Libya due to floods.

“We stand ready to support relief operations for the displaced, children and in hospitals. We are in touch with relevant authorities,” UNICEF added.

According to local media, due to the floods caused by the Mediterranean storm Daniel, at least 150 people lost their lives in eastern Libya over the weekend.
