Senator Godswill Akpabio Is Senate President of Nigeria’s 10th Assembly

Akpabio Voted New Nigeria’s Senate President

The Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District Godswill Akpabio has been sworn in as the Senate President of 10th National Assembly.

Akpabio, scored 63 votes to beat his rival, Senator Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara West Senatorial District) who polled 46 votes in the election.

Nigeria’s new senate President was born on Dec. 9, 1962 to the family of Chief Obot Akpabio and Madam Lucy Obot Akpabio (née Inyangetor) of Ukana, Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udim Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom.

The former Governor of Akwa state while accepting his election as the senate president gave assurance that the national assembly under his leadership will support the Executive arm of Government and also maintain independence of the legislators.  Akpabio said the senate under his leadership will give all necessary legislative backing to the removal of petrol subsidy by President Bola Tinubu.

Also, Barau Jubril, who represents Kano-North Senatorial District emerged as Deputy President of the senate following his nomination at the inauguration of 10th Senate on Tuesday June 13.

Jubril’s nomination was done by David Umah and seconded by Salihu Mustapha.

The Senator shortly after his nomination, accepted to serve as Deputy President of Senate.

He was immediately sworn-in by Clerk to National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal
