Aides to the chairman of Badagry local government, Olusegun Onilude have reacted to a report of the state of the Pota Primary Health centre.
The reaction followed a report of Snakes invading the Pota PHC.
Dr. Sewedo Samuel, Chief of Staff to Onilude, dismissed the backlash following the report.
He described them as “WhatsApp-scripted drama” and a calculated smear campaign to weaken Onilude ---Onilude Segun Adeniran, is the outgoing chairman of the Badagry Local Government-- ahead of the 2027 polls.
“The mob agitating today is politically motivated, "said Dr. Sewedo.
The Aide who said the council has the highest number of PHCs in Lagos state stated that they have done the best within their capacity to manage them.
He said the council has done a lot about upgrades of PHCs under its purview.
Dr Sewedo also mentioned and shared some of the pictures of upgrades done by the council with Access24 News.
"We need to be clear here that our administration has acknowledged that we could have done more regarding the Pota PHC's condition. We issued a public apology, demonstrating leadership with humility despite valid justifications on our part" said Dr. Sewedo.
He revealed that the dilapidated state of the centre is due to a fire incident that affected the facility.
"Instead of recognising this honesty, some have chosen to spread deliberate misinformation. They’ve overlooked the actual cause of the damage, a fire incident that affected parts of the facility, including rooms with broken ceilings currently circulating online.
After assessing the damage alongside the NULGE Chairman, we initiated plans to renovate the facility. However, technical reports raised concerns about the building's integrity post-fire, and given the low patient traffic, we opted to allocate resources to more impactful projects like the Staff Quarters, strongly advocated for by the NULGE Chairman, who the staff considered as their Councillor," he said.
Another aide, Kriko Augustine, described the situation as “deeply troubling” and called for accountability rather than defensiveness.
“I asked myself, how did this slip through the cracks? We owe our people not just action, but honesty”, Augustine said
He admitted that the centre's condition was unacceptable. “Functional healthcare infrastructure is non-negotiable. We won’t rest until every community feels the impact of good governance,” the aide added.
Meanwhile, residents have been expressing their opinion on the issue via comments on Facebook.
Their Comments:
Temitope Olanrewaju Ajo: What about the maintenance allocation? What was it used for to the extent of abandoning the grasses to grow to forest level?
Babajide Akran: I am deeply concerned about the snake infestation. Olatunde Tizbank, it’s shocking that nurses abandoned night duties due to safety fears, with snakes found in critical areas. I call on the outgoing Chairman, Hon. Onilude Segun Adeniran, to urgently address this crisis before leaving office. Our communities deserve a safe and functional health centre.
Bolaji Ejemighaye: Ikoga needs divine intervention on everything...from road to security.
A WhatsApp message sent to Dr Asiyanmbi of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board and Health District 5, whose purview the hospital is said to be under, had not been responded to as of the time this report was made.
