The Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are meeting in Abuja on the political situation in the Niger Republic.

They are to decide on the next lines of action after the series of propositios made to the military junta in Niger to restore democratic governance in the ECOWAS member country.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, is hosting the leaders in Nigeria's Capital Abuja.

An earlier decision taken by the west african leaders was the military intervention proposed after a seven days ultimatum to the junta who overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum.

The bloc Heads of State and Government had called for the immediate release and reinstatement of Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and Government of the Republic of Niger.

They rejected any form of purported resignation by Bazoum and declared him as the only recognised and elected President by ECOWAS, the African Union and the international community.
