Qantas said on Sunday that data stolen from 5.7 million customers during a cyberattack in July has now been released online by hackers.
“Qantas is one of a number of companies globally that has had data released by cyber criminals following the airline’s cyber incident in early July, where customer data was stolen via a third-party platform,” the airline said in a statement.
The company had earlier confirmed that hackers breached a system used by one of its customer contact centres, gaining access to sensitive details including names, email addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth.
On Sunday, Qantas said that it was working with specialist cyber security experts to determine exactly what information was compromised in the latest leak.
The airline also disclosed that it had secured a legal injunction from the Supreme Court of New South Wales, where it is headquartered, to block the stolen data from being “accessed, viewed, released, used, transmitted or published by anyone, including third parties.”
The breach, one of the largest in the airline’s history, comes amid a wave of cyberattacks targeting global companies through third-party platforms, exposing millions of customers to potential fraud and identity theft.
