A passenger train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, leaving several carriages overturned and triggering panic among those on board.

According to local reports, the incident occurred along the popular corridor shortly after the train departed Abuja around 11a.m Nigerian time, while on its way to Kaduna.

Visuals of the scene trending on-line, showed how commuters were scrambling to safety in fear and confusion.

As at the time of filling this report, it remains unclear what caused the derailment, and there has been no official confirmation of injuries or casualties.

According to the report, military personnel have been deployed to the site to assist in evacuating stranded passengers.

However, authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
