President Bola Tinubu has named Mrs Omotenioye “Teni” Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), replacing Dr Nkiruka Madueke, who had served as the Council’s pioneer head since June 2024.

The appointment, confirmed in a statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, signals a strategic move to deepen Nigeria’s global climate leadership and strengthen domestic policy on energy transition and sustainability.

Majekodunmi, a UK-trained environmental lawyer and climate finance specialist, boasts over 17 years of experience across carbon markets, renewable energy, and climate policy. She holds both an LLB and a Master’s degree in Climate Change and Carbon Financing from the University of Warwick, and is certified in ESG governance and sustainability through programmes supported by the Welsh Assembly Government and UNIDO.

A recognised figure in Nigeria’s climate sector, she previously served as the NCCC’s Financial Adviser, and has been a consistent voice in shaping the country’s position on climate negotiations, including contributing to the UNFCCC’s Copenhagen draft in 2009 and Nigeria’s first and second National Communications.

Teni is also a certified ESG expert, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association and FIDA, and sits on several inter-ministerial committees including those on Climate Change and Biofuels. She trained at the prestigious FRA Williams Chambers and served as Executive Director of ENSOL Environmental Solutions Ltd, where she established a government-recognised Centre of Excellence on Climate Change.

Majekodunmi’s influence extends to global institutions, having advised UNDP, UNIDO, and the World Bank on carbon market strategies, and regularly liaising with UN agencies on Nigeria’s adaptation and mitigation frameworks.

President Tinubu praised Dr Madueke for her foundational leadership and expressed confidence in Majekodunmi’s ability to elevate Nigeria’s climate governance amid intensifying global environmental challenges.
