The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Monday, played against the female team of England, at the ongoing 2023 Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand.

European champions England took on nine-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nation winners Nigeria for a place in the quarter-finals, as the game ended in a stalemate, which led to penalty shootouts.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria ran the European champions England into extra-time after Lauren James was red-carded for stamping on Alozie.

Substituted Kanu couldn’t make contact with the ball, with only the goal at her mercy after she was nicely set up by Ajibade.

The match entered penalties as England won 4-2, forcing the women out of the competition.

Access24 reports that today’s game was the fourth meeting of both sides at senior level and Nigeria triumphed on two occasions, pipping the English 1-0 on July 23, 2002, then again by a more comfortable 3-0 on April 22, 2004 in friendlies, but lost today on penalties.

The Lionesses, who finished the group stage with a 100 per cent record, set up the much-anticipated round of 16 clash against Nigeria, who finished second in Group B.

Both sides were unbeaten in the tournament, and England progressed into the next round which looks like huge step forward as most favorites including USA, Germany and Brazil have been knocked out of the competition.
