The clamour for creation of new states as well as more women representation at the national assembly took the centre stage at the Northeast Zonal public hearing on the review of Nigeria's 1999 Constitution which held in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.
The public hearing offered citizens, civil society groups, traditional institutions, youth organizations, professional bodies, and stakeholders an opportunity to engage in the constitutional review process.
The gathering brought stakeholders across different political parties, ethnic and religious affiliations among others.
Representatives from various states in the North east geopolitical region made a strong case for the creation of new states, like Savannah out of Borno State, Katagum out of Bauchi State, Tangalawa and Highland out of Gombe State and Amana out of Gombe State among others.
Concerns on electoral reforms, security including local government police among others were also on the front burner.
The constitutional review committee acknowledged the widespread interests and pledged to compile and present the region's demands for necessary action.
