The Socio Economic and Accountability Project, SERAP,  gathered students from some States and Federal Universities in Nigeria, to educate them on advocacy and activism.

SERAP, during the Campus Civic Space Campaign, tutored the students on "What How and When" of advocacy.

Speaking about steps and ways to improve freedom of expression among Nigerians, the Program Officer, SERAP, Folashade Arigbabu, revealed that promotion of freedom of expression is important, so as to curb the excesses of bad and corrupt leaders.

Arigbabu also advised that to collectively promote advocacy, the students need  to get informed and seek knowledge about things happening in their environment.

She said; There is a difference between advocacy and activism. Either ways, you  must learn to recognize which works for you, and also learn to participate actively in holding public servants accountable for their actions.”

Arigbabu therefore told the students to look into “third person advocacy”, stressing that the habit of turning a blind eye towards other people’s abuse would always make the perpetrators feel untouchable.

In a similar development, the accountability project, gave certificate of recognition to some “exceptional” members of its  Accountability Club, SAC.

Access24 Correspondent, Deji Ogunsola reports that SERAP launched SAC to “mobilize and encourage Nigerians particularly students of tertiary institutions to participate in the promotion of transparency and accountability and the fight against corruption in Nigeria.”

SERAP had also revealed that SAC aims to “promote the inclusion of students and student bodies in accountability processes and awareness among students on procedures for activating accountability mechanisms to contribute to the fight against corruption and to improve transparency and accountability in the management of public resources, and respect for human rights.”
