A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday, July 16 discharged and acquitted former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, of all the charges of money laundering brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke upheld Fayose’s no-case submission because the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him to warrant his defence.
Fayose had been standing trial on allegations bordering on money laundering and fraud during his tenure as governor of Ekiti State.
The former Ekiti governor is alleged to have received a cash payment of five million dollars from the then Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, without going through any financial institution.
He was also alleged to have retained the sum of N300 million in his account and took control of the aggregate sum of about N622 million which he reasonably ought to have known formed part of crime proceeds.
