In a landmark ruling that has shocked India’s political elite, a court in Karnataka has sentenced former Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna to life imprisonment for raping one of his domestic staff members. The sentence was handed down Saturday, just a day after the 34-year-old was convicted of the crime.

Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) party, an ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP, was found guilty following a wave of public outrage sparked in 2023, when hundreds of explicit videos allegedly featuring him surfaced online.

Though Revanna initially denied the charges, he broke down in court on Friday and begged for leniency following his conviction. His legal team is expected to file an appeal. In April 2024, Revanna fled India using a diplomatic passport, amid escalating controversy. He was arrested a month later upon returning from Germany. His office previously claimed the viral videos were doctored.

This case marks a rare instance of an Indian politician from such a powerful family facing real consequences for sexual assault. Analysts see it as a possible turning point in how the Indian judiciary handles sexual violence involving public figures.

In addition to the life sentence, Revanna still faces two other rape cases and one sexual harassment charge, allegations he continues to deny.

The Janata Dal (Secular) party has yet to issue an official statement regarding the court’s verdict.
