Bauchi moves to address fertilizer shortage among farmers

Just a while back, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed launched the 2025 fertilizer sales in Alkaleri Local Government Area, promising to sell subsidized fertilizer at N20,000 per bag.
But things didn't quite go as planned, and farmers started having trouble getting their hands on the fertilizer.
The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Aliyu Iliyasu Gital, explained that global shortages, high prices, and some internal mix-ups are to blame for the delay.
He expressed his optimism that a new partnership with a Moroccan company, OCP Africa, will help get things back on track pointing out that, "they promised to supply 50 trucks of fertilizer to the state”.
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Aminu Hammayo, is leading the charge to get to the bottom of things.
He has set up a committee to investigate the financial and administrative side of fertilizer production in Bauchi State.
The committee will be looking into issues like poor communication between government agencies and the fertilizer company, financial mismanagement, and delays in getting the fertilizer to farmers when they need it most.
In addition, the committee will be tracing and recovering funds and recommending reforms.
They are expected to wrap up their investigation in two weeks.
As the rainy season is in full swing, farmers and stakeholders are keeping their fingers crossed that the committee's findings will bring some much-needed relief.
